There was a (young) poet from Bloxwich…

A Celebration of Life

Last Saturday 9th March saw a unique free charity arts event at Bloxwich’s popular Bookmark Bloxwich Theatre, in Elmore Row.

‘A Celebration of Life’ featured artwork, music, poetry and other readings, and work from and in tribute to Pete Boot (former drummer with rock band ‘Budgie’) who was represented on stage, although he was unable to attend himself, due to illness.

Willenhall Society of Artists put on an exhibition of a wide range of art for sale, with a percentage going to charity, cakes and drinks were sold by the organisers in support of this, and amongst various other entertainers and poets live on stage were poets Ian Henery, Elizabeth Stoney, Kristina Griffiths, Clair Clews and – surprise, surprise – myself, as I had been asked to read some of my own rarely performed poetry.  The whole being ably MC’d by poet Jae Lindsey, also of Bloxwich.

The aim of the event, which opened 2pm – 5pm, was to raise awareness of Parkinson’s Disease and to raise funds for the Neurological Research Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Cancer Rezearch UK.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Walsall Councillor Dennis Anson and Mrs Kate Anson graced the event with their presence and Willenhall Councillors Sean and Dianne Coughlan were also present.

Yours truly was ‘tail-end Charlie’ on a packed programme which was both varied and very enjoyable, and I was glad to see that, despite being preceded by a line-up of great and talented acts and speakers, my own small contribution – a series of short haiku-style poems previously written/broadcast live on twitter entitled ‘The Buzz Moves’, plus my short horror story ‘A Close EnCounter’ – received a good response from a generous audience.  I would like to thank them, and the organisers, for ensuring that my ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ was not ‘fifteen minutes of pain’!

I had time to take a few photos during the event, if you are interested please feel free to check out the Flickr set via the following link:
